Calumet County’s Rick Sense Nominated for 2026 Governor’s Tourism Rising Star Award
JANESVILLE, WI – The Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association (WATA) has officially nominated Rick Sense, Economic Development and Tourism Specialist for Calumet County, for the 2026 Governor’s Tourism Rising Star Award. This prestigious honor recognizes newcomers who demonstrate transformative leadership and a deep-seated passion for Wisconsin’s $25.8 billion tourism industry.
In just two years, Sense has transitioned Calumet County’s tourism profile from “mediocre to thriving.” His efforts contributed to a record $77 million total economic impact in 2024, driven by his innovative “visit and stay” philosophy. By branding the region as a place to “come for a visit and stay for a lifetime,” Sense has bridged the gap between travel and long-term community residency.
“Rick is a true servant leader who refuses to accept the status quo,” said Sheila Everhart, Executive Director of WATA. “His massive production of high-quality assets—from podcasts to professional itineraries—has set a new standard for regional marketing. More importantly, his mentorship has empowered organizations like ours to become stronger voices for the state’s rural and agricultural heritage.”
A “Rising Star” Impact:
- Digital Powerhouse: Produced 70 episodes of the Travel Calumet Original Podcast and 112 YouTube videos, while growing Facebook engagement by over 300%.
- Strategic Vision: Developed 7 unique itineraries and oversaw the distribution of 48,000 tourism guides across the Midwest to capture regional travel dollars.
- Advocacy for Agricultural Tourism: Actively champions Wisconsin’s fastest-growing tourism segment, helping farm families create new income streams and preserve vital farmland.
- Economic Growth: Facilitated a 5.7% increase in direct visitor spending and a 4.2% rise in local tax revenues in 2024 alone.
Sense’s background as a former District Chief of Staff and his current role as a radio host on WHBY’s BizTalk provide him with a unique platform to advocate for Wisconsin’s supper clubs, orchards, and outdoor assets like High Cliff State Park. His commitment to the industry extends beyond data, focusing on the “human element” of hospitality and land stewardship.
The Governor’s Tourism Awards celebrate the individuals who make Wisconsin a premier destination. Winners will be announced at the upcoming Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism on March 17 in Milwaukee.
